Sophia Dziegielewski F. DSM-IV-TR in Action. DSM-5 E-Chapter Update

The DSM-5 E-chapter Update bridges the gap between the DSM-IV-TR and the DSM-5. This chapter outlines the changes in the DSM-5 while using the original treatment information from the second edition of the book. The DSM-5 E-chapter Update allows the current information to be used to support the practitioner with current application principles relating psychopathology to clinical mental health practice. This chapter allows instructors to be able to use and transition to the DSM-5 while still teaching the DSM-IV-TR. What makes this “in action” text unique is that it not only breaks down the criteria for the diagnostic categories but it helps the practitioner directly apply it. The DSM-5 E-chapter Update will follow a similar format as the treatment outlined in the current edition is still quite valuable and should not change much with the full book revision. The chapter provides a bridge to the information still relevant and current in the book such as the application of the diagnostic assessment found in today's behavioral-based biopsychosocial field of practice. This chapter includes the DSM-5 categories that correspond to each chapter in the second edition. Since instructors and practitioners alike, will need the information in the DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5 for a short time knowledge and application of both books will be essential. The existing cases and applications will remain helpful. What remains unique about this chapter is that it will allow for the joining of the second edition with the new changes in the DSM-5. The teacher and practitioner will be able to synthesize the information from both versions of the DSM to complete a diagnostic assessment that goes beyond the DSM-5 including current evidence and competency-based skill development in the resulting practice strategy.

Linda Seligman Selecting Effective Treatments. A Comprehensive, Systematic Guide to Treating Mental Disorders, DSM-5 E-Chapter Update

The DSM-5 material in this e-chapter update provides a bridge between DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5. Professors, students, clinicians, and others interested in mental health diagnosis and treatment will find all of the information they need to smoothly transition to the new DSM-5. The e-chapter update provides all of the DSM-5 changes organized by disorder, so that readers can easily and completely adopt the new DSM-5 material. Many of the disorders in DSM-5 remain largely unchanged from DSM-IV-TR. This, too, is noted in an effort to provide consistency and clarity between the 4th edition, and the DSM-5. This new e-chapter update outlines the background for important changes made to DSM-5 including the elimination of the bereavement exclusion, new course specifiers for mania, a switch to the new syndrome concept for autism and schizophrenia, and many of the name changes to existing disorders (e.g., intellectual disability disorder, gender dysphoria). All of this, and more, is included in the e-chapter update to Selecting Effective Treatments, 4th edition.

Donald W. Black DSM-5® Guidebook

DSM-5® Guidebook: The Essential Companion to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition is a user-friendly, supplementary guide for psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health practitioners who need to know how DSM-5® differs from its predecessor in terms of organizational structure, diagnostic categories, and the criteria themselves. While it does not replace the comprehensive and authoritative DSM-5®, it illuminates its content by teaching mental health professionals how to use the revised diagnostic criteria and by providing a practical context for its clinical use.The book offers many valuable features, including: An historical overview of the development of the DSM in general, and DSM-5® in particular, a progression that might be said to mirror the evolution of psychiatry as a whole. The material on the creation of DSM-5® includes coverage of dimensional assessment, reliability and field trials, and the controversies that arose during development of DSM-5®. An indispensable chapter on how to use DSM-5® that addresses coding, diagnostic certainty, the demise of the multiaxial system, and the key changes to each diagnostic category. Full coverage of the significant reorganization from DSM-IV-TR® to DSM-5®, which is designed to incorporate advances in neuroscience, brain imaging and genetics. Chapters were reordered to reflect scientific advances in the understanding of psychiatric disorders, and the presumed etiological and the pathophysiological relationships among them. Extensive coverage of the decision to integrate dimensional measures into DSM-5®, which may enhance the clinician's ability to assess symptom variation and severity and aid in patient evaluation, treatment decisions, and outcome monitoring. The various measures are presented and their use discussed. Finally, as the authors were not part of the revision process, they offer a fresh, down-to-earth perspective that will resonate with clinicians by focusing on the changes that will most significantly impact clinicians' professional lives. DSM-5® Guidebook provides a roadmap to the many changes in this living document, DSM-5®, and will prove invaluable to psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, neurologists, social workers, and all who strive to understand mental illness as it is conceived today.

Darrel A. Regier The Conceptual Evolution of DSM-5

There is a need to refine our current psychiatric nosology to produce diagnostic criteria and disorder categories that keep pace with advances in neuroscience while at the same time enhance clinical utility. Furthermore, dimensional aspects of psychiatric disorders require greater recognition so as to improve our understanding of boundaries between disorders and underscore the heterogeneous nature of psychopathology. The Conceptual Evolution of DSM-5 provides a framework for the evolution of the forthcoming diagnostic system in the fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which will help advance clinical practice and facilitate ongoing development of diagnostic criteria. This manual: Highlights recent progress in our understanding of cross-cutting factors relevant to psychiatric diagnosis and symptom presentation Includes detailed discussions on the role of factors such as age, gender, culture, and disability in the expression of mental disorders Provides a review of genetic evidence supporting a cross-cutting approach to nosology Offers suggestions for integrating cross-cutting factors with DSM-5. The Conceptual Evolution of DSM-5 was written to impart a theoretical context for understanding potential revisions to DSM-5. The authors reevaluate the structure of the current manual and discuss cross-cutting approaches to facilitate clinical practice and refine research approaches that will guide clinical trials, genetics, imaging, and treatment guidelines. The authors provide the following insights: Detailed descriptions of age-, gender-, and culture-specific aspects relevant to psychiatric diagnosis and the need for sensitivity to these factors when making diagnoses Discussions on the dimensional aspects of mental disorders, including overlapping symptoms relevant to many or most diagnoses Consideration of alternative classifications of disorders that recognize disorders sharing validating features Presentation of neuroscientific and epidemiologic evidence to expand understanding of disorders beyond that of the categorical organization presented in DSM-IV A review of clinical implications, including how clinicians may shift their conceptualization of previously reified diagnostic criteria and their consequences. As presented to the 99th Annual Meeting of the American Psychopathological Association, The Conceptual Evolution of DSM-5 explores the rapidly changing research base for the understanding of neurodevelopmental, neurocognitive, addictive, and other psychiatric disorders. The contributions in this volume confirm that DSM-5 is intended to be a living document that can accommodate revisions to specific diagnostic areas based on new evidence that is replicable and subject to review. This efficient updating process will help researchers and clinicians keep abreast of the latest protocols for the research, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness.

Abraham M. Nussbaum DSM-5® Pocket Guide for Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Building on the best-selling Pocket Guide to the DSM-5 Diagnostic Exam, The DSM-5® Pocket Guide for Child and Adolescent Mental Health teaches readers how to formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan for this patient population. Because these patients are more likely to initiate mental health treatment in a primary care rather than specialty care setting, the authors pay particular attention to the practical exigencies of the primary care setting. Accordingly, chapters are devoted to topics such as diagnostically interviewing around different chief complaints; performing 15- and 30-minute versions of the diagnostic interview; recognizing developmental milestones and red flags for referral, and more. The book's structure is flexible, affording readers the freedom to read sections in their entirety for background or to use the guide on the fly, as with interview questions for specific diagnoses. The book is an essential reference for primary care physicians, pediatricians, residents in training, and general psychiatrists, and other practitioners caring for children and adolescents experiencing mental distress and mental illness. The authors have designed the book with a variety of useful features: Multiple tables and figures make expert advice readily accessible, including tables for developmental milestones, common clinical concerns, and medications. Brief supplements to the diagnostic interview are presented, including an easy-to-use summary of DSM-5 disorders, a stepwise approach to differential diagnosis, the mental status examination and a psychiatric glossary, DSM-5-related diagnostic tools and scales, and coverage of alternative diagnostic systems and rating scales. A seven-step sequential framework for generating a differential diagnosis helps clinicians develop their clinical decision-making skills and ensure that they take into account the many and interrelated causes of mental disorders. Initial psychosocial recommendations are included for such topics as sleep hygiene and behavior management. Recognizing that clinicians need to use DSM-5 criteria and evidence-based treatment protocols to formulate treatment plans, the authors designed this book for all levels of experience. Direct, practical, and informative, The DSM-5® Pocket Guide for Child and Adolescent Mental Health will enable readers to efficiently and effectively use DSM-5 as part of a comprehensive diagnostic interview and treatment planning.

Группа авторов Handbook on Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) are both prevalent and a source of significant impairment for patients who suffer from them, yet they remain underrecognized and underdiagnosed. Handbook on Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders provides comprehensive and cutting-edge coverage of OCRDs for clinicians and trainees in the context of the new classification framework established by the DSM-5. Chapters cover OCD, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), hoarding disorder, trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder), excoriation (skin picking) disorder, and illness anxiety disorder, among other related conditions, ensuring that readers are current on both the research on and the standard of care for these illnesses. In addition, each chapter employs a logical and consistent structure, addressing diagnostic criteria and symptomatology, epidemiology, etiology and pathophysiology, comorbidities, course and prognosis, assessment and differential diagnosis, psychosocial impairment and suicidality, and other topics such as cultural and gender-related issues. Treatment approaches and considerations are explored in-depth.The Handbook's useful features are many: The first book focused on the OCRDs to be published since the development of DSM-5, it reflects a deep understanding of the disorders and the DSM-5 development process. Readers can depend on the utmost compatibility with DSM-5 because the book was edited by the chair of the DSM-5 work group, and the chair of the sub-work group, that oversaw the development of the OCRD category. The editors have provided a helpful introductory chapter that thoroughly addresses the changes from DSM-IV. The book includes a chapter on disorders that were seriously considered for, though ultimately not included in, the DSM-5 OCRD chapter and for which research offers some support for a close relationship to OCD. These include tic disorders, illness anxiety disorder (hypochondriasis), and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Case studies are provided in each chapter, as well as key clinical points, both of which help the reader understand, contextualize, and make use of the book's content. Recommended readings at the end of each chapter offer the opportunity to deepen understanding. The costs to society of undiagnosed and/or untreated OCRD are high in both human and financial terms, and clinicians need to master all available tools to help patients and families understand and cope with these disorders. Handbook of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders deserves a prominent position – both in the literature and on the clinician's bookshelf.
